Prospect Park on Tax Day

Today's loose dog report:

7:55 A.M.: One brown dog, following its master at 30 paces, headed from Wellhouse up path to Nethermead
8:00 A.M.: One white dog headed west on Breeze Hill, lingering around bird feeders
8:05 A.M.: One white dog head north on east side of Lullwater

One other, we forget just where now.

4:30 P.M.: As we crossed Center Drive, we saw 4 unleashed dogs. One dog was a large black lab mix, another was a medium sized white dog. A PEP car went by and of course did not stop.

I have started walking in Prospect Park after work. The park is awash in unleashed dogs at this time, though the newly approved "rules" state that they cannot be let loose until 9 pm. I hate unleashed dogs because I was cornered and almost attacked by two large aggressive dogs in the Nethermead in 1998.

At 6.30 on the evening of April 15 I was walking my pit bull in the Long Meadow. Unleashed dogs were romping as far as the eye could see. There must have been 10 or 15, not counting the ones I saw in the northwest GAP entrance area. I deployed my Nikon to document the outrage, when, like magic, every dog returned to its owner and was leashed up before I could fire a shot. It was the strangest thing I ever saw. All these Park Slope white people know they are in the wrong, yet they persist in breaking the rules.

I will be back to document the latest wrinkle in obnoxious Prospect Park dog ownership: the distracted fool on a cell phone, running an unleashed dog with little or no supervision of the animal. One of several I observed on the 15th had a huge Akita running rampant in the long meadow, chasing Robins, splashing in filthy puddles etc. The owner was completely oblivious. The dog should have been on leash according to the rules.

Prospect Park looks rattier than ever, too. No surprise there.
