So it turns out that the rabid raccoon reported in Brooklyn was not the first in memory. According to the DOH website there were rabid raccoons in 2005 and 2008 too.
And note this sage "advice": "Keep your dog leashed while outdoors unless at a specified off-leash area or park." Your pet isn't at risk in an unfenced area of a city park just because the phrase "off-leash area" is assigned to it?! Presumably this is an attempt by the credentialed geniuses who run the DOH to protect themselves from lawsuits when someone's dog is bitten by a rabid animal in an off-leash area.
